I’m not surprised at all that you guys found Kansas City unspectacular because the entire metropolitan area is very spread out and huge. You could drive around Kansas City all day long and never see the downtown area. The entire metro consists of both Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas which is right next to it across the state line and both cities are surrounded by suburbs of multiple towns all the way around.
I worked downtown for 8 years and ever since they put the arena down there back in 2007-2008 it has actually become very nice with high end entertainment districts and luxury condos.
Low-key Kansas City is pretty great but it’s kind of a kept secret. We have a smaller population than most big cities and most of us here prefer it to stay that way because the traffic here is generally much better compared to other similar sized cities such as Austin and it’s way more affordable. You can get a 3 to 4 bedroom house here for nearly half the price compared to any other similar sized city.
St. Louis has more tourism because of the arch but the two cities aren’t even comparable. St. Louis in general is just a much trashier city overall. That is just one reason why St. Louis’ population has been shrinking for decades while Kansas City’s population has been constantly growing for years.
BTW did you guys stop at any QuickTrip gas stations? We have them all over the Kansas City area and they are generally ranked as one of the top gas station chains with only Wawa coming close to being as good.
