Message: My nail biter: Driving home in a manual with no clutch.
I leave my second shift job in a late 80s Celica with a manual transmission, and getting to the freeway, I am noticing I am having to apply more and more clutch pressure to shift. On the freeway was no big deal, all top gear. When the freeway ends, it gets hairy. It’s at least a half dozen stop lights and a stop sign I needed to navigate, shifting exclusively by matching RPMs. The first one was the red arrow for a left turn, rolling into it and really hoping I am not going to have to run it, and it finally changes. Not coming to a complete stop at the stop sign was the only real law broken, not counting speeding on the freeway. And, since I was working second shift, it was after bar close, and nobody was on the road, so fuck that. Turns out the cluch was hydraulic, and there was a break in the line, so it was leaking, so I was able to get those first bit of shifting in, then no more fluid, no more clutch release.
That was the night I earned my Stick Shift Cred.
