Message: Hello, Car Talk LIve Puke & the Gang.  I have a quandary (insert Dale drop here).  As you related on one of the shows a while back, VW got in trouble for cheating the emissions on the diesel vehicles for several years.  I have one of these, a 2012 manual trans Jetta.  For the most part, I’m happy with the car and looking forward to it being paid off in 5 months.

I received word on the court settlement a bit ago, and looked into it over the weekend.  Here are my options:

  1. VW buys the vehicle back.  I’d get about $16,000 minus the balance of my loan ($3,750).
  2. VW installs an SCR system in the car and gives me about $5,100.
  3. Do nothing.

I’m seeing some pro & cons of each.

For option #1, I’d get a good amount back but need to find a replacement vehicle.  I’m not seeing much I’m interested in new (or even used) right now.  If I needed to replace it, I’d want 4WD, manual, and diesel.  I’d also have a sizable car payment again that I don’t really want.

For option #2, I’d get a nice check back.  The drawback is having an SCR system that’s been bolted on as an afterthought.  I’m not sure how reliable this would be, and since this would interface with the ignition (can’t start if the urea tank is empty) I’d have to hope that this doesn’t mess up the car.

For option #3, I get to keep the car, and it gets paid off in a bit.  Not sure what the future would hold for emissions inspections and parts for the vehicle.  I wouldn’t want to end up with having to pay for the retrofit myself.

Thoughts?

Message: Is the way Nick pronounces words like “mountain” and “button” a New England thing or is it just a Nick thing?

Sincerely,
